YOUTH LED THE WAY: EUROPEAN VOICES PROJECT CULMINATES IN ROSARNO WITH CONCRETE ANTI-RACISM POLICY ADOPTION
From May 21 to 23, the town of Rosarno became the epicenter of European youth advocacy and civic engagement as the VOICES FROM MIGRATION project successfully concluded its final international event. The initiative brought together participants from over 15 European countries for a unique participatory journey centered on migration, inclusion, democratic participation, and shared European values.
The VOICES project represents a multi-phase effort that transformed lived experiences into tangible policy. In its first phase, 180 students spanning 21 countries collected 70 migration stories and testimonies across Italy, Greece, and Belgium. These personal narratives of integration, identity, and belonging served as the foundation for youth-drafted policy recommendations. The second phase translated these ideas into high-level advocacy, showcasing the project’s exhibition at the European Parliament and catching the attention of local policymakers in Southern Italy.
The final three-day event in Rosarno marked the culmination of this journey, delivering both cultural celebration and concrete legislative impact:
Policy Adoption: The municipalities of the Piana di Rosarno formally adopted a Local Anti-Racism and Integration Action Plan, directly inspired by the students’ recommendations—marking a permanent policy outcome driven by youth-local cooperation.
The VOICES Exhibition: The multimedia exhibition officially opened in Rosarno, establishing a dedicated local space for reflection, dialogue, and remembrance regarding European identity and migration.
Democratic Simulation: International students participated in a rigorous simulation of the European Committee of the Regions, stepping into the shoes of European policymakers to debate, negotiate, and draft official opinions on integration policies.
Multicultural Festival: The local community joined international delegates for a celebration of Europe’s diverse cultural heritage and shared values.

“The VOICES from Migration project has proven that young people are not merely the future of Europe—they are active citizens of the present whose voices already hold the power to shape policy,” said Pantelis Chantzaras and Theodosis Tasios. “By listening to migration stories and engaging in the hard work of democratic negotiation, these students didn’t just participate in an educational exercise. They inspired local governments to adopt real, binding anti-racism action plans.”
The event highlighted the critical importance of active citizenship, empathy, and collaboration between local authorities, universities, civil society, and youth at a time when democratic dialogue is more vital than ever. Participants left Rosarno with a renewed sense of responsibility and a clear blueprint for how grassroots youth advocacy can bridge the gap between local communities and European institutions to build a more inclusive, united continent.
About the VOICES Project: The VOICES project is a transnational initiative dedicated to fostering democratic participation, inclusion, and a deeper understanding of migration within the European framework. By connecting youth with local authorities and European lawmakers, VOICES empowers the next generation to take an active role in civic life and policy-making.
