Perrotis College at the Forefront of International Metadata Research

Confirming its strategic focus on international outreach and interdisciplinary collaboration, Perrotis College co-organized and hosted the 19th International Conference on Metadata and Semantics Research (MTSR 2025). The conference served as a global meeting point for academics, researchers, and professionals from around the world, focusing on metadata, semantic technologies, artificial intelligence, and their applications in fields such as education, culture, and the agri-food sector.

Participants were welcomed by Professor Emmanouel Garoufallou from the Department of Library, Archival and Information Systems of the International Hellenic University and Director of the MetaDATA Lab, Professor Miguel Ángel Sicilia from the University of Alcalá, the Conference Chair, Dr. Georgia Zafeiriou, and the Administrative & Resources Coordinator of Perrotis College, Maria Kostouda. Brief welcome addresses were delivered by the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the American Farm School, Dr. Christos Ritzoulis, who highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research and the connection of data science with agricultural production, sustainability, and the education of young scientists, as well as by the Dean of Perrotis College, Dr. Kiki Zinoviadou, who emphasized the value of partnerships and the application of new technologies in the agri-food sector.

Within the framework of the conference, the Head Librarian of the “Dimitris and Aliki Perrotis” Library, Damiana Koutsomicha, presented the paper entitled “The American Farm School and Perrotis College Libraries: A GLAM example of innovation”, highlighting the role of the Institution’s libraries as models of innovation in the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums). Her presentation focused on the library’s modern services, reaffirming Perrotis College’s contribution to the international dialogue on the management of cultural and scientific information.

Moreover, the Dean of Perrotis College, Dr. Kiki Zinoviadou, participated in a round table discussion on the application of metadata and semantics in viticulture and oenology, contributing to the dialogue on the organization, standardization, and utilization of specialized knowledge in the field. On the same panel was also the Head of the School’s HUB, Dr. Ilias Kalfas, who presented the Institution’s research perspective, emphasizing the importance of data interoperability and the integration of scientific, geographical, and cultural information.

During the four-day international conference, thematic areas were explored that bridged theory with practice, ranging from digital repositories and knowledge graphs to agriculture, the environment, and agri-food innovation.
